AI is already in the soup, but it is not welcomed by many, as the results of a survey carried out in the United States have shown.

A new study by the MITRE research center and the market research firm Harris found that nearly three-quarters of Americans express reservations about the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in high-value applications such as autonomous vehicles, access to government benefits or health care. Only 48% believe AI is safe, and 78% are very or somewhat concerned that AI could be used for malicious purposes.

Furthermore, the study found that 82% of US respondents support government regulation of AI, while 91% of tech experts also support it. Less than half of those surveyed said they were comfortable using AI-assisted technology for routine medical questions or government benefit forms, and three-quarters said they are specifically concerned about the creation of deepfakes and the entry of AI-generated content into the media.

While respondents seemed generally wary of AI, the survey found that certain demographic groups expressed a more favorable opinion than others.

Rob Jekielek, managing director of the Harris Poll, commented on some details:

Men, Democrats, the younger generation, and Black/Hispanic Americans…are more comfortable than their counterparts with the use of AI for federal government benefits processing, online doctor chatbots, and autonomous and unmanned carpools .

Still, he explained that concerns about AI exist across all demographics, suggesting that even early AI adopters may be concerned about its future.

It is clear that AI is not yet trusted by Americans, as many are concerned about their security and privacy. We will have to wait a few months to see if this rate continues in the future and if these numbers are similar in other countries.
