Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4: The most popular folding improves in functionality and autonomy

Samsung recently shared that the company shipped 10 million foldable phones in 2021, with the Galaxy Z Flip3 being the best-selling model.

Today, Samsung has presented its successor, the folding smartphone Galaxy ZFlip4, which follows in the footsteps of its successful predecessor and adds some improvements.

Streamlined design that continues to turn heads

The new Galaxy Z Flip4 has improved its construction. It now features a slimmer hinge, protruding 1.2mm less than before, as well as narrower bezels, which have allowed to reduce the width of the phone by 0.3 mm and its height by 0.8 mm.

At the same time, it is a durable design, as both the outer screen and the surface glass are protected by Gorilla Glass Victus+.

It has IPX8 resistance, which means that it resists up to 30 minutes submerged at 1.5 meters, although Samsung does not recommend putting it in the pool or taking it to the beach.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 is available in four colors — graphite, Pink Gold, BoraPurple Y Blue — with matching aluminum frames (Aluminum Armor) for a uniform design.

For those who want to make their phone even more unique, Samsung makes it easy to create a personalized device with the BeSpoke Edition which allows you to choose between 5 colors for the front panel, 5 colors for the rear panel and 3 pains for the frames/hinge — a total of 75 possible combinations.

The outer screen gains functionality and design

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 keeps the outer screen the same size as its predecessor (1.9″), but adds new forms of customization.

First of all, Samsung offers more exterior screen customization options using basic or graphical interfaces, even matching those of your Galaxy Watch. You can also set the outer screen with your AR Emoji characters or colored texts. Or set the background using your own photos, GIFs and even videos (up to 15 seconds).

Galaxy themes that apply to the phone interface now extend to the outer screen as well, creating a consistent look and feel between both screens.

Samsung has added more features to the outdoor screen to interact with the phone without unfolding the device:

• Responses to notifications and messages using voice (which is converted to text), emojis and preset responses.
• Additional widgets for important tasks like making calls to 3 favorite contacts and controlling smart devices using SmartThings scenes.
• New quick settings to toggle Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Airplane mode, and flashlight.
• Unlock the phone from the outer screen using facial recognition.
• Access to Samsung Pay credit cards.

Improved cameras at night

Samsung has improved the Galaxy Z Flip4’s cameras for brighter photos and steadier videos, even at night.

The main rear camera has a 12MP sensor that is 65% brighter, with pixels whose size has increased from 1.4 to 1.8 μm. This increase in size allows for better night shots. Also, capturing video at night is aided by features like Self FPS Y Super Night Solution as well as improved OIS and VDIS systems.

One of the advantages of folding phones is that you can take high-quality selfies with the main camera using the cover screen. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 offers for this purpose a functionality quick shot improved, which now includes Portrait mode and a preview that reflects the actual aspect ratio of the photo (rather than just part of it).

Outside, we also find a 12MP ultra wide angle camera with f/2.2 aperture, but no telephoto camera. When unfolding the phone, the internal camera offers a resolution of 10MP and aperture f / 2.4.

Samsung has added the capabilities flexcam to the outer screen, which means you can start recording a video on the main screen and then switch to Flex Mode to continue recording hands-free using the outer screen with a viewfinder.

FlexCam gives great flexibility in capturing content. For example, you can hold your phone horizontally to mimic a traditional video camera, or place your phone on the ground for a ground-level shot.

These experiences also extend to third-party apps like Facebook and Instagram, which allow you to fold your device while you’re on Instagram Reels, so the user interface changes automatically.

Other interesting features with self framing, which causes the main subject to remain in the frame at all times, even when moving.

Track Shot allows you to choose the person you want to keep in the center, and is supported in third-party video call apps. The tracking range has increased from 3.5 meters / 4 people (Flip3) to 5 meters / 10 people (Flip4).

Flex mode for third-party apps

When you’re watching content or chatting with your friends, Flip4’s form factor offers great flexibility.

Flex mode provides the best view, whether fully unfolded or partially unfolded to keep your hands free. This mode is optimized for the most popular applications:

• Camera apps: Instagram (Reels, Stories), Facebook (Reels), SODA, SNOW, B612, Candy
• Video calling apps: Zoom, Google Meet, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, MeetUs
• Streaming service apps: YouTube, Melon, Bugs Music, Gnie Music, Wavve

For apps that are not optimized for Flex mode, Samsung provides the FlexMode pane. Apps now automatically switch to Flex Mode and allow you to use a touchpad in the lower half.

It’s also easier to launch the multi-window while in Flex Mode, as you only need to swipe up from the bottom of the screen with two fingers to select a second app to open.

Flagship performance

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 arrives with the most powerful chip, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen1manufactured in a 4nm process.

The phone has a 3,700mAh battery, which represents an increase of 300 mAh compared to its predecessor (equivalent to about 3 more hours of video playback). This was one of the most repeated requests from users, so we are glad that Samsung was able to increase the capacity of the cell.

It has fast charging Super Fast Charging at 25W (50% charge in 3 minutes) and Fast Wireless Charging 2.0 wireless charging.

Price and availability

Galaxy Z Flip4 is available in two already classic colors, Bora Purple and Graphite, and two new options, Pink Gold and Blue. In addition, the expansion of the line that represents Galaxy Z Flip4 Bespoke Edition, already available in 28 countries around the world, allows up to 75 different combinations of the color of the glass and frames.

Galaxy Z Flip4 will be pre-orderable in select countries from August 10 and will be available in the United States, South Korea, and select European countries beginning 26 of August.

Customers who reserve a Galaxy Z Fip4 will receive a free one-year subscription to Samsung Care+, which offers protection against drops and screen cracks with support from Samsung experts in 51 countries.

Samsung has not yet revealed the prices of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4.
