We are obsessed with speed. The more fiber we have, the better. But you are wrong. You don’t need to pay that much fiber, you don’t need to have the best. We look for operators that offer us the best speed at the lowest price. And no, you don’t need that much. Are paying for more fiber than you need.
When we go to hire Internet we look for the best offer that it offers us, at least 1Gbps. Some companies even offer us symmetrical 10 Gbps promising us the maximum speed, like Digi. And you may think that it is just what you need, to have the maximum to play and watch series and browse. But the truth is that you will have much less than half of what you have left over.
The series doesn’t look good…
If the series or movies don’t look good, it’s not because you have 300 Mb or 500 Mb instead of 1 Gbps contracted. you have too much Just take a look at the conditions of the different streaming platforms.
Netflix It indicates, on its help website, that we need 25 Mbps to reproduce the 4K Plan and the contents in maximum quality. That is to say, 100 Mbps would be enough for you even if you are sharing an account and watching series at the same time, in the same house, from different televisions. If it is not seen, it is not the fault of your 300 Mbps or your 500 Mbps. You do not need to have contracted more speed in this case.
Disney+ recommends that you have 25 Mbps speed for content played in 4K UHD. If you have the TV connected by cable, and there is no line failure, you will always have this speed. All operators offer more even in their minimum rates. If you’re on WiFi, too. Unless there is an interference or coverage error, you would not have a problem.
Video calls won’t load…
In the case of video calls either you need to have 1 Gbps contracted. And, much less, 10 Gbps. If they do not look good, there may be a specific error in the program or that the mobile or computer is not receiving good WiFi coverage. But you don’t need more speed.
As in the previous case, just take a look at the conditions or recommendations of some of the most common programs. Zoom recommends that you have speeds of 3.8 Mbps to do 1080p video calls. You won’t need that 10 Gbps for them to be seen clearly.
Not even if you live with roommates and you all telework at the same time, you need 1 Gb or 10 so that there are no cuts. You can have up to 50 simultaneous video calls, which is unlikely, and they should look good. If they are not seen, the fault is not in the fiber you have contracted.

If you want to browse the Internet, you only need a few megabytes for most websites to load without any problem. You will have no problem writing emails and sending them, receiving them, and using social networks like Twitter or Facebook. Nor for watch videos on YouTube or Twitch.
If you use your Internet connection to check all this or buy online, don’t worry because it will be enough to have 100 or 300 Mb.
Do you really need more?
There are few cases where you will need to have rates that offer us incredible speeds. Not if you make normal use of the Internet, as we have seen. In which cases yes? In a few. You may need it if you work with video editing and processing and you need to quickly transfer large files. Or if you dedicate yourself to broadcasting live videos online with great quality. In that case, having the best speed can help.
Or in professional cases of companies or small companies that have a server with large amount of data. If you need to continuously upload or download data to the server for work, the maximum speed will come in handy.
So what contract?
Taking this into account, what do we hire? You can hire any rate that suits your needs and at a good price. There are operators that allow us to get 500 Mb or 1 Gbps for a good price and for just 30 or 40 euros. If the conditions suit you, go ahead. There are many cheap options that offer us good speed. But it is not the only important thing and you will not always need to bet on the maximum. Study your habits or those of the person to whom you are going to hire the rate (your parents, for example) before always choosing what seems best. And therefore more expensive.
But you should not be obsessed with hiring maximum speed. You do not need it. You do not have to pay more to have more megabytes and you should also look at other important aspects that will affect how you connect to the Internet. For example, the coverage reaches all your devices or how you have configured the router to make it as secure as possible and more efficient.
