A cloud storage service, a computer or an SD card (in mobiles that use them). All these locations and some more can be the destination of a WhatsApp backup that contains all the chats, data and photos. A backup that can be saved on media other than the mobile itself and in which they would already be working on WhatsApp.

The WhatsApp backup can be stored outside the mobile but also exported to other devices

The exportable WhatsApp backup responds to the announcement made in February by the instant messaging platform regarding the limitation of the size of the backup that can be made in Google Drive. This compromises the use made of WhatsApp by those who were unconcerned about the number of files, images, and videos sent, received, and stored with this application. Once the maximum limit of free space available in Google Drive was reached, it was time to checkout to continue accumulating data.

But now, with the possibility that WhatsApp is working on, these limitations now have alternatives since it is allowed to host the backup copy of the application in other storage spaces, both virtual (Cloud services such as Google One itself) as physical. And in the latter case it can be worth a memory card inserted in the smartphone (and that can later be extracted to transfer the information to another device) such as a computer.

The function that WhatsApp is working on will offer the possibility of export a complete copy of all data stored in the appoffering options such as full encryption of the backup, sending it to Google Drive.

Options are also offered to select a complete copy or only certain data and/or files, such as chats, images, videos or other multimedia files.

One detail that is still unknown is whether this new type of exportable backup will allow data to be transferred from the account on an Android device to the same application but installed on an iOS device. It is an option that since the arrival of WhatsApp in multi-device mode should be feasible, but since there is still no access to a version of WhatsApp with this new function, we will have to wait for an accessible beta to be able to check it.
