MSI may eliminate some motherboards from its portfolio to make room for the new DDR5 RAM memories. According to information revealed by industry sources on Wednesday (15), the Taiwanese manufacturer will discontinue production of various platforms compatible with DDR4 modules based on Intel’s Z790 and B760 chipsets.

With the launch of 12th generation Core processors in 2021 – the first compatible with DDR5 – Intel has chosen to maintain legacy support for DDR4 memories, but is supposedly putting pressure on motherboard manufacturers to abandon the older standard with limited performance. Apparently, MSI is embracing this initiative.

Historically, the North American giant’s ecosystems have maintained legacy support for memory standards for two generations. Compatibility with DDR4 modules started with 6th generation processors (Skylake), but the DDR3 standard remained “alive” in platform support for another two years until the arrival of the 8th generation (Coffee Lake).

According to the report published in the Board Channelsthe following 700 series motherboard models — compatible with 13th generation Core — will be discontinued by MSI:

  • MPG Z790 EDGE WIFI DDR4
  • PRO Z790-A WIFI DDR4
  • PRO Z790-P DDR4
  • MAG B760 MORTAR DDR4

Intel has the largest share of the processor market, so it’s natural that a significant portion of its users still have a computer with DDR4 memory, which may justify the extended support for the older standard. AMD, for its part, took a bolder step and started supporting only DDR5 with the Ryzen 7000 series.

Gradually, the latest generation memory sticks become cheaper, allowing the industry to quickly migrate to the DDR5 standard, whose products are capable of exceeding speeds of 6,000 MT/s.
