Twitter is preparing for a little big revolution, which could come as early as February 2023, and which would bring the maximum limit of characters available in a tweet to no less than 4,000 characters.

A button that would indicate “Read more” would allow tweets that occupied up to a maximum of 4,000 characters to be displayed

From the initial 140 characters with which Twitter was born in 2006 until the expansion in November 2017 to the current 280-character tweets, there has not been such an important change on Twitter.

The novelty has been confirmed by Elon Musk, the new CEO of Twitter, from his own profile on the social network, after being asked by a user. As he has explained, the essence of Twitter would not change so much since an extension of the maximum number of characters to 4,000 would not mean that the timeline would suddenly be filled with endlessly long tweets.

Rather, the change will mean that those who exceed that extension would continue to appear with the same appearance as the others, but would include a button that would indicate «Read more»which would allow the tweet to be displayed in order to read it in its entirety.

The modification would be one more measure within Elon Musk’s strategy to prevent users from resorting to external applications or web pages when they want to show an opinion longer than what fits in the 280 characters of a tweet, a common practice today among tweeters.

In this way, and as long as the text content of the tweet does not exceed 4,000 characters, it will be possible to publish it in one of these new ultra-long dropdown tweetsavoiding having to resort to any of the usual methods in these cases, which range from offering a link to another online platform to screenshots of the mobile notepad or the publication of the text on a web page, an app instant messaging or other social network.

The reactions to the announcement have not been long in coming. Some users welcome the change, which can put an end to Twitter threads, but for others it means a complete devirtualization of the spirit of this social network.
