In 2022 12 out of 14.2 million foldables shipped were Samsung, this year the competition will be much stronger. Among the best-selling candidates ready to do battle with Galaxy Z Fold 4 there is him, the first foldable from Google, and there is also the Find N2 from Oppo, a smartphone launched on the market at the end of last year which in form factor closer to the Pixel than the Galaxy. COMPARISON OF TECHNICAL DATA SHEETS

FORM FACTOR AND DIMENSIONS

As for the form factor, there are two philosophies followed by producers: on the one hand Samsung with a tall and narrow 23.1:9 external display and an internal 21.6:18, on the other Google and Oppo who have preferred to propose a smartphone more compact which gives up a few millimeters in height recovering it in width, with proportions that bring to mind those of a book. Pixel Fold, for example, has an external display with a 17.4:9 ratio and an internal 5:6 one. Same principle for Find N2, which however it has smaller size compared to the other two Folds.

  • From closed and from open:
    • the highest: Galaxy Z Fold 4
    • the narrowest: Galaxy Z Fold 4
    • the widest: Pixel Fold
    • the thinnest: Pixel Fold
  • Weight:
    • the heaviest: Pixel Fold
    • the lightest: Find N2

DISPLAY

If a Pixel Fold/Find N2 vs Galaxy Z Fold 4 subdivision could be made for the form factor, when it comes to displays they are Pixel Fold and Galaxy Z Fold 4 to have more points in common distinguishing itself from the Oppo smartphone. The most generous external screen is that of Samsung: 6.2″ against Google’s 5.8 and Oppo’s 5.54, all with 120Hz refresh rate and a high peak brightness. Samsung’s is the only one to have HD+ resolution (FHD+ for the others) but it’s also the only one to offer Plus protection from Corning Gorilla Glass Victus.

OLED outside and inside, 7.6″ for Pixel Fold and Z Fold 4, “only” 7.1″ for Oppo. The refresh rate reaches 120Hz for all the models examined, 1-120Hz however we find it only Find N2 and Z Fold 4.

  • larger external display: Galaxy Z Fold 4
  • larger internal display: Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Pixel Fold

PROCESSOR

The most recent of the three is also the only one to be equipped with the latest generation processor: the reference clearly goes to Pixel Fold which hides a Tensor G2 with Titan M2 security chip under the body. While waiting for Tensor G3 to arrive, he is the top of the range from Google.

Different speech instead for Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Oppo Find N2, both released last year and for this reason equipped with an older processor, or Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1.

DRUMS

Comparing batteries is always ambiguous, for the moment we will focus on mere technical data while waiting for more concrete tests in the field. On paper, therefore, it is Pixel Fold (the thinnest of the three!) to have the larger battery with 4,821mAh against Oppo’s 4,520 and Samsung’s 4,400. The fastest charging speed belongs to Find N2 with the 67W of SupeVOOC technology.

  • bigger battery: Pixel Fold
  • Faster Charging: Find N2

CAMERAS

Difficult to compare the photographic sector of the models taken into consideration in this analysis, since each of these has its own peculiarities with the hope – on the part of the manufacturer and the final customer – that the solution adopted is balanced and qualitatively satisfactory.

Pixel, Galaxy and Find have in common the presence of 1+1+3 camerasi.e. one external front, one internal front and three rear (main, ultra wide angle, tele):

  • external camera
    • Pixel Fold: 9.5MP in central hole
    • Galaxy Z Fold 4: 10MP in central hole
    • Find N2: 32MP in central hole
  • internal camera
    • Pixel Fold: 8MP integrated into the top bezel
    • Galaxy Z Fold 4: 4MP hidden under the display
    • Find N2: 32MP in side hole
  • rear cameras
    • Pixel Fold: 48MP + 10.8MP ultra wide angle + 10.8MP telephoto with 5x optical zoom
    • Galaxy Z Fold 4: 50MP + 12MP ultra wide angle + 10MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom
    • Find N2: 50MP + 48MP ultra wide angle + 32MP telephoto with 2x optical zoom

PRICES

  • Pixel Fold: from 1,899 euros (12/256GB)
  • Galaxy Z Fold: from 1,879 euros (12/256GB)
  • Find N2: from 7,999 yuan, about 1,055 euros at current exchange rates (12 / 256GB)

The ones shown above are the list prices of Pixel Fold, Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Find N2. For the latter at the moment we have to stick to the Chinese market, the conversion into euros therefore only allows us to have an idea of the price range in which the smartphone is positioned. The only one of the three to have a street price is the Samsung foldable: it can be found under 1,200 euros online (for example on eBay), therefore at a price potentially comparable to that of Oppo. It is also true that Z Fold 4 already has several months on its shoulders, and that in 2/3 months it will be replaced by the new model.

  • the most expensive: Pixel Fold
  • the most recent: Pixel Fold
  • the oldest: Galaxy Z Fold 4
  • the cheapest: Find N2 (but the price is in yuan)

CONCLUSIONS

Three foldable smartphones, three top-of-the-range smartphones in some ways extremely similar to each other and in others different. Form factor aside – here we go to personal taste – for a possible choice, the details can affect, such as the IPX8 certification present in Google and Samsung but not in Oppo, or the nib holder of Galaxy Z Fold 4 (S Pen) and Find N2 (Oppo Pen) that Google he didn’t quote. Difficult to do it in the future, given that the Pixel doesn’t seem to even support it on a hardware level.

Therefore, it might not be the product itself that affects the final choice towards one of the three, but rather the ecosystem which it belongs. And here Samsung and Google have an advantage over Oppo. With Pixel Fold you get the pure experience of Android, but you could lose something in terms of user experience and app compatibility, aspects on which Galaxy Z Fold 4 has a decidedly advantage.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 is available online from eBay at 1.233 euros. The value for money is Good and it is the best device in this price range. To see the other 70 offers click here.
