Bicycles, skateboards, roof boxes and tires need space and quickly create chaos in the carport or garage. TechStage shows practical solutions from 10 euros that create space.
The private fleets in front of some family garages are impressive. The selection ranges from tricycles, bicycles, skateboards and scooters to hoverboards – and then usually in multiple versions. Together with the roof box, winter tyres, snowboard, garden tools and the like, things quickly get cramped in the driveway, garage or carport. Wall and ceiling mounts, shelves, hooks and lift systems for the garage help to keep things tidy. TechStage shows which solutions are available and what needs to be considered when purchasing.

Brackets and suspensions for bicycles always make sense when the bike is not needed every day or there is no other way for space reasons. The main problem with the wall mounts: The bikes don’t stand around on the floor, but many of the simple mounts are not really space-saving. When using an e-bike, handling is even more difficult due to the additional weight. In addition, when buying the bracket, you have to pay close attention to its specification. The inexpensive models are often only designed for a weight of up to 20 kg, which is simply not enough for an electrically powered mountain bike.
If you hang the bike with a hook on the front wheel, you still lose spatial depth. If you want other things to fit under the suspended bike, you have to hang the bike up very high, which makes the task a real feat. Since children’s bikes are significantly lighter and because of their size they protrude less into the room, they are best suited for such inexpensive hooks .
For families with several bikes, there are also wall mounts for three to six bikes. Significantly fewer holes are then required to mount them than if you mount a separate bracket for each bike. In terms of price, however, the individual assembly is significantly cheaper. The triple mount currently costs 60 euros on Amazon – at the beginning of the year a whopping 117 euros were due. The model for six bikes currently costs around 66 euros.
To avoid wheel marks on the wall, wheel suspension with additional wall protection for the front tire is a good idea – for example from Amazon, where the package with four colored wall brackets is available for 20 euros. As stable as this construction is, the rear tire is still against the wall. It makes sense here to attach a self-adhesive wall protection mat from 15 euros. Alternatively, such brackets can also be found with additional rear wheel protection. An example of this is the Bikstor bike rack for 20 euros .
Slightly more expensive, but also more practical from our point of view, are wall mounts for the front wheel that can be folded to the side. Here the bike is swiveled after hanging on the wall and then requires less room depth. Examples of such swivel mounts are the Kranked Twist models from RTR Bikes for 69 euros or the Pro Bike Tool wall mount for 31 euros .
If you want to hang two bikes on top of each other, you should use a bracket for the bike frame instead of a wheel suspension. Simple models that can be folded against the wall when not in use are available in a double pack from 14 euros. However, mounts with more than one contact surface are much more comfortable here because they are less wobbly. These are available from about 19 euros . Frame mounts with an adjustable mounting bracket are even more flexible. Modern mountain bikes, for example, tend to hang crookedly on the wall. Examples of this are the Sportbeer mounts for 29 euros and 33 euros respectively .
If the holder is to serve as an assembly stand at the same time, it is worth investing a little more. Inexpensive bicycle repair stands for wall mounting with fixation of the frame are between 29 and 38 euros . Brackets that protect the paintwork are also available. The inconspicuous wall bracket from Zamurano for 17 euros holds the bike in position at the pedal and the two tires.
If you have a lot of room height, you can also hang your bike under the roof and create a lot of space. The necessary ceiling lifts for bicycles are available from Relaxdays for as little as 10 euros. They work with a cable and a combination of several pulleys and allow space-saving storage at a height of three to four meters. The same applies here: if you want to hang up a heavy e-bike, you should pay attention to the specifications.
Budget ceiling lifts are often only designed for a maximum weight of 20 kg. Brand models, such as the P4B bicycle lift , can lift up to 57 kg and cost around 40 euros. In our experience, you should carefully weigh up whether this system is worthwhile before you buy it. Even after a long search, we couldn’t find a suitable place for assembly.
The deluxe version for ceiling mounting is the hydro-pneumatic flat bike lift for a whopping 350 euros. Here the bike is conveniently placed on the holder and fixed with a clamp. It is then folded up onto the ceiling with little effort. However, apart from the high price, there is another disadvantage here: the flat bike lift is only suitable for bicycles with a maximum weight of 21 kg. Most e-bikes are simply too heavy here. In the case of carports with a sloping roof, an auxiliary construction must also be attached – manual skills are required here.
Electric scooters, scooters and stunt scooters
Scooters, with or without an electric drive, are also part of the summer fleet and often get in the way. Although the scooters can usually be folded up, they can still get in the way. If you want to store the two-wheelers neatly and space-savingly when not in use, you can also use a simple wall hook – if it fits through the rim. This is not always the case with e-scooters and fancy stunt scooters. Then all you have to do is reach for the Meollo Scooter wall mount for 26 euros.
In the case of heavy scooters with an integrated motor and battery, you should also pay attention to the maximum weight here! If you don’t want the tires to leave any marks on the wall, it’s also worth buying a self-adhesive wall protection mat from 15 euros.
Since there is no side stand, especially for children’s scooters and models without a drive, a simple scooter stand from 10 euros can also provide more order.
skateboards and longboards
Skateboards and longboards also like to get in the way – especially if there are several in the family fleet. Whether the boards are stored upright or lengthwise is not a matter of taste. Although the boards hung upside down look very stylish, the space saving is significantly less than with so-called board racks .
The cheapest way is to mount it on a wall bracket with double hooks, in which the axis of the board is hung. However, the hooks should not be completely rigid in order to be able to adjust the width. We have had good experiences with the Aieve suspension for just under 13 euros in a double pack . This is also available from Lattcure in almost identical form . Somewhat higher quality, but inflexible in size, is the no-name wall mount from Amazon for 10 euros.
So-called skateboard racks are more space-saving, but usually also more expensive. Simple models made of acrylic with space for a board are available from around 15 euros. The fancier and apparently much more stable version made of wood is available from Jucker Hawaii for 40 euros . The racks are also available with space for two , three or four skateboards for between 30 and 50 euros.
Since the brackets only have to carry a manageable weight, you can also make them yourself with a 3D printer or cut them out with a strong laser. Free 3D templates for skateboard mounts are available on Thingiverse, for example. Our private wooden mount was made with an Atomstack A5 M50 Pro (test report) .
tires
Another space guzzler in the garden and carport are the summer and winter tires of the car. Of course, you can simply place them on the ground – if you lose pressure, however, there is a risk of the tires deforming and the tires then get in the way.
It is therefore better to store them in a special tire rack or a tire stand/rim tree. Standing shelves for eight tires are available from Dreamade from around 53 euros. However, tire racks for wall mounting are much more space-saving. The folding shelf from ECD Germany , which is designed for four tires, is available from around 49 euros.
Fixed rim trees are available from about 15 euros, for example from the manufacturer Unitec or Cartrend . Wheeled tire stands are more flexible and can be put away quickly when needed . Such mobile rim trees are available from about 20 euros .
If you want, you can also hang the tires individually on the wall. Such sets with a total of four tire holders for wall mounting are available from around 20 euros.
roof box
If available, the roof box is also a real space eater. If you really want to create space here, you need sufficient ceiling height – owners of a carport have a clear advantage here. The ceiling height of standard garages is often too low for installation above the car. Mounting on the side wall is also possible, but the space gained is less.
The simplest and cheapest are simple wall brackets such as the QLS roof box bracket for just under 36 euros . The two steel brackets screwed to the wall offer enough space to place a roof box on it. However, the brackets in which the roof box is placed standing on its side are a little more space-saving. Such mounts are available from Nordrive for 57 euros or from Lanco for just under 30 euros .
Roof box brackets for ceiling mounting are also available. In the simplest case, these consist of four ceiling hooks and two lashing straps, such as the Fasty roof box lift for around 30 euros . Despite the very simple concept, this solution seems to work well according to customer reviews. If you want, you can also buy the components individually, but then you should pay close attention to the load capacity of the hooks.
The premium version with hand crank operation costs 100 euros. Theoretically, the inexpensive bicycle lift also works here .
Miscellaneous
Tools such as spades, ladders, garden hoses or lawn trimmers often cause clutter in the garage. If you want to hang them up, you have a huge range of options.
So-called device holders with a clamping function or broom holders are best suited for brooms, spades and rakes . However, you have to pay attention to the diameter here so that all tools actually fit in. The brackets are made of plastic and metal. However, due to negative experiences with the quality and durability of plastic models, we would recommend a metal variant. These are available in sets of 20 for a slim 16 euros . The advantage of the individual clamps is the flexible installation. Disadvantage are the many boreholes.
Alternatively, the device holder is also available on a rail. Two pieces of such clamping rails, each with three holders and four suspension hooks, are available from iBell from 20 euros. If you also want to hang up a slightly larger device with a thicker handle, you should take a look at the device holder with a foldable hook. These usually offer more space and are therefore also suitable for lawn trimmers or axes.
There are also many other special holders, for example for garden hoses or lawn trimmers . The numerous sets with universal wall hooks , which usually work just as well, are significantly cheaper . These are available between 16 and 50 euros, depending on the manufacturer and the hooks they contain. We have been using an inexpensive set with a total of 12 hooks for 14 euros for some time and are completely satisfied with it. In addition to the brackets, a textile strap for attaching a hose, screws and dowels are also included in the scope of delivery.
However, if you are planning to stow larger things, such as a ladder or surfboard, you should better use heavy -duty wall hooks. These hold more weight and are usually significantly larger. The set with six brackets, each with a load capacity of 45 kg , is available from around 22 euros.
basics
If you want to attach objects to the wall or ceiling, you have to attach them properly and observe the manufacturer’s load values. The dowels must also be selected correctly – the best bracket is useless if the screws tear out due to excessive load!
If several brackets are required next to or one below the other, it is worth screwing them onto a board so as not to perforate the entire wall.
Many solutions, such as the ceiling lift, can be used universally. If you want, you can attach a roof box, ladder or kayak instead of a bicycle. However, one should think carefully beforehand whether there is enough space and whether one actually wants to hang the bicycle over the valuable car.
Conclusion
Solutions for more order in carports and garages are available in umpteen variants, some at low prices. But if you look around among the many offers, you should never lose sight of the goal. It pays to plan carefully here.
As practical as some brackets may look, in order to really create space, there must also be enough ceiling height. You should also compare the offers, there are often identical goods at very different prices.
You should really take a close look at heavy equipment such as e-bikes. Many cheap mounts are great for spades, skateboards or children’s bikes, but the e-mountain bike or roof box would often be too heavy. Here it is worth paying close attention to the specifications.
