If you require it, rest assured that there is the possibility of changing the file extension of any file, document or content that you have in your Files app on your iPhone or iPad.

All you need to change the file extensions of your iPhone or iPad is vCheck that your files show their extensions in the Files app. This of course, in case you haven’t.

Change the extension of your files from the iPhone and iPad Files app

  • First of all you will have to activate the visibility function for file extensions in the Files app. This makes it possible for the extensions to be visible in order to change them from the View menu and then clicking View Options, followed by Show File Extensions.
  • Now long press on the name of the file you want to change the extension to. Then click on “Rename” or from the iPad Files app you will have to choose the Return key after having selected the file to change.
  • You will only have to change the file extension to what is necessary, just as you would do with any other renaming. Obviously, you will only touch the part of the file extension, for example: TEXT.txt to TEXT.rtf or whatever you need.
  • Click on use a new extension for the file in case confirmation is required when changing said extension.

Once you have it ready, the change will already be made so that you can use the file as you wish and the process is more practical. Since the extension will already be renewed in your Files app.

Important notes

Now, highlighting as a very important note, changing the file extension does not necessarily change the file type itself, there is only a change in the file association. That is, in case you change the extension of the .doc file to .jpg it does not mean that the doc file is a jpg. However, the app in which you will access the file will be changed or at least you will try if it does not correspond as it should.

The Files app on iOS and iPadOS is not the same as the Finder app on macOS. So despite having the option to change the extensions on your files and view them in the Files app it is not yet possible to change a large number of elements at the same time. Although it could arrive in some future version of these devices.
