An American has listed a number of reasons why people should avoid moving to Ireland.

In an article on Medium, Margo Hamacher, originally from Georgia in the US, explained exactly why “the Emerald Isle disappoints”.

Margo moved to Dublin last year for work and previously lived in Spain and Germany.

Speaking on RTE Liveline today, Margo explained exactly why she wouldn’t recommend moving here to a friend.

“I have six reasons outlined,” she said.

“The first is generally poor infrastructure in Dublin and in the country in general.

“Basically roads, buildings and public transportation, I find them all to be lacking compared to other similar size cities in central Europe.

“Number two is getting to other places in the world and in Europe. Dublin Airport itself, despite some recent events, is pretty great but it’s hard to get to from the city centre and that makes weekend travel or longer things inconvenient.”

Margo said her third reason was the prevalence of drinking in Ireland.

“I think it’s a big part of Irish culture and there’s things to be said for that,” she said.

“But I’ve found that it can be hard to make social plans that don’t revolve around drinking.

“Most people go out and grab pints as a go-to action and that can get a bit draining after all.”

Her fourth reason was the difficulty she said she has faced to enjoy the country without a car.

“I am from the States that’s true there as well but I think if you compare Ireland to other countries in Europe.

“Ireland has a lot of beautiful corners but personally it’s been a struggle for me to try and find things to do and get to those places without a car.”

Margo said the fifth reason is the “price of life”.

“I highlighted the price of restaurants but rent as well. I find you pay a lot more in all of Ireland essentially for what you get compared to some other places I’ve lived,” she said.

“I was shocked when I went out to some pretty small towns on the west coast and prices of food in restaurants were identical to Dublin.”

And finally, her sixth reason is emigration.

Margo said: “It’s been a common trait in Irish history for a number of reasons but I’ve been here for 15 months now and nearly half my friend group has moved away.

“They’ve gone to the Netherlands or Germany, some to England.

“A lot of them have noticed that what they get paid for the work and skills they have in other places allows them to have a higher quality of life.”
