Sony has announced the release date for the PSVR 2. The virtual reality glasses for the Playstation 5 will not appear until 2023.

Sony’s VR headset Playstation VR2 will be released in early 2023. The manufacturer announced this on Twitter. An exact date or price for the virtual reality headset has not yet been revealed. The survival action “The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution” will not come until 2023 for PSVR2.

The new virtual reality headset for the Playstation 5 should make it much easier to dive into other worlds than the previous model. Only a USB-C cable is required to connect to the PS5. Wireless transmission from the console to the VR glasses is not supported. In this area, Meta’s standalone Quest 2 goes further: it can, if desired, establish a Wi-Fi connection to the game computer in order to play PC VR titles.

An external camera no longer needs to be set up to track the PSVR 2. Instead, cameras in the VR glasses capture the environment and the controller. Built-in eye-tracking should enable complex game scenes like in “Horizon Call of the Mountain” with the help of dynamic “Foveated Rendering”: Only the areas focused on by the eye are rendered in full resolution, which relieves the graphics chip.

Other improvements include HDR display, an increased resolution of 2000 x 2040 pixels per eye and motion controllers with haptic feedback. Playstation 5 owners are already familiar with these effects from the Dualsense controller. Its triggers offer a noticeable resistance, for example when grabbing or pulling the trigger with a weapon.

The old Playstation VR from 2016 cost 399 euros at the start and can now also be operated on the PS5. A PS4 controller and an adapter for the old PS4 camera, available free of charge from Sony, are required.
