It’s been a long time since Google began actively promoting RCS as the new text messaging standard to replace SMS. In the process of attracting new entrants to the technology, the Mountain View company continues to roll out additional features.

In their latest update, Google announced that RCS will now be enabled by default for all users unless they previously disabled the option. Additionally, RCS messages in the Messages app will now be fully encrypted by default.

Instead of manually registering with RCS or using a phone number to register, the new system offers automatic background registration, which simplifies the process and does not require user input.

With end-to-end encryption, messages will remain private to both Google and network operators, which makes this feature very important. In addition, group chats will also use end-to-end encryption.

RCS provides a number of improvements over standard SMS, including text entry indicators, read receipts, and the ability to share high-quality photos and videos.

Thus, Google Messages is now a significant competitor for iMessage on the Android platform.

While Google continues its efforts to convince manufacturers to use RCS, Apple remains the main antagonist. If Apple also adopts this standard, text messaging between iPhone and Android will improve significantly.
