Google Chrome 110 hit the stable channel this week with NVIDIA RTX Video Super Resolution support, new shortcuts, mobile improvements, and more. Now Google has released Chrome 111 with other new features including smooth transitions for pages, new privacy and improved Picture-in-Picture mode.

Smooth transitions for web pages in apps

Google is working hard to make Chrome apps look more and more like native Chrome apps. To that end, he’s releasing a new view transitions API for the browser. Testing with it started in Chrome 104, but it is finally available in version 111 of the browser.

New download manager

Google wants to reorganize the interface of its browser starting with the download manager, which is now available as a bubble in the top bar of Chrome instead of a new bar in the bottom area.

The bubble appears automatically when downloading a file in version 111 of Google Chrome and allows you to see all the details in the same way, only with a more organized design that takes up less space on the screen.

Picture-in-Picture mode improvements

Google Chrome’s Picture-in-Picture mode has been available for a long time, but now it has gained more customization options, allowing websites to customize the controls shown in the video thumbnail.

This is possible thanks to the new experimental PiP Documents API that allows developers to include their own HTML elements in the reduced window for the video. The idea is that video, streaming music and podcast sites will use Picture-in-Picture to show controls, playlists and other elements to make this feature more useful.

Permissions automatically revoked

As of Chrome 111, permissions that are not used for more than 2 months will be automatically revoked. The idea is that the permissions for sites work just like on Android, ensuring greater security of the data and sensors used by the accessed sites.

In practice, this means that if you haven’t accessed a website after two months, it will no longer have access to your webcam, microphone, files, notifications and much more. A “permissions extract” will be shown when performing a browser security check.
