Elon Musk bought Twitter for US$ 44 billion and one of his first actions as owner of the social network was to fire important executives and reinforce the idea of ”freedom of expression” in a publication made this Saturday (29), in which the billionaire claims to be forming a “moderator council” responsible for judging the platform’s content.
As Musk explains, for now the terms of use remain unchanged, but it is certain that in a few months the new owner of the company will make adjustments to adapt the moderation policy to his ideals. In previous episodes, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO highlighted that he values an environment that promotes the plurality of comments pointing to fewer restrictions.
Musk has always been against Twitter’s enforcement measures — for him considered “censorship” — against users who promote hate speech or topics that contrast with what is allowed on the network. According to rumors, with the acquisition of Twitter it is possible that the former President of the United States, Donald Trump, will have his profile unblocked.
Trump was banned from Twitter and several other social networks for using the apps to encourage the January 6, 2021 invasion of the Capitol. With that, he founded Truth Social to communicate with his supporters without restriction from moderators — the app is downloadable on the Play Store.
In an open letter addressed to the community and investors, the businessman highlighted that “it is important for the future of civilization to have an online public square, where a wide variety of opinions can be debated in a healthy way, without resorting to violence”, evidencing his desire to create a welcoming social network.
While it said a “moderation board” has been created, for now there are no details on what will come with regard to Twitter posting limits.
