The ASUS ROG Ally promises to be one of the biggest tech launches this year, but as expected, it won’t arrive alone, bringing with it some competitors.

One of ASUS’ main portable console rivals is the Aokzoe A1 Pro, one of the many portable consoles powered by the low-power AMD Ryzen 7040U lineup, which was announced earlier this week. This new Ryzen processor, codenamed “Phoenix”, is built on the Zen4 and RDNA3 architectures, bringing the latest AMD innovations to the mobile market.

AMD this week revealed benchmarks for the new AMD Ryzen 7040U lineup with integrated RDNA3 graphics. The Radeon 780M offers a GPU clock of up to 2.7 GHz and 12 Compute Units. This is an upgrade from the Radeon 680M line (RDNA2) with the same core count but clocked at just 2.2GHz.

According to AOKZEO, the 780M is 28% to 31% faster in synthetic 3DMark tests than the latest generation iGPU. More importantly, it offers similar performance to the GTX 1650 Ti Max-Q (3% to 7% slower) and GeForce RTX 2050 mobile graphics (3% slower to 26% faster). The latter is equipped with a 64-bit memory bus, so it doesn’t work well in TimeSpy. Note that the colors from the 3DMark benchmarks are mixed up:

On the CPU front, the Phoenix APU outperforms the high-end Ryzen 9 6900HX (at 45W). As a reminder, the Phoenix U series operates within the 15 to 30 watt power range, so even at full TDP the new CPU is still faster.

The company has also provided its gaming performance estimates on some AAA titles. Resolution and image quality will depend on the title, but the main takeaway is that the integrated GPU delivers 45–60 FPS in all games with at least 800p resolution (the console has a 1200p display). However, players still have many options including lower refresh rate/frame cap or use of upscaling technologies.

In a test with Cyberpunk 2077, the Aokzoe A1 Pro was able to run at an average of 60 FPS, which is an excellent result for such a demanding game.

Titles like God of War (2018), The Last of Us Remake and Hogwarts Legacy were also tested, but they need to be run with low graphics for a 60 FPS performance.

As we can see, portable devices are getting more and more powerful, which makes us even more excited to see the future of this aspect of the video game industry.

For now, we can only wait for the performance tests of the Z1 line that equip the new ROG Ally from ASUS.
