Teradata introduces VantageCloud Lake, a new data lake. A new architecture combines workload management with object storage in the cloud.

Teradata is expanding its cloud commitment and has announced a new version of its analytics platform Vantage, VantageCloud Lake. VantageCloud Lake is a self-service product that makes Vantage Cloud-native capabilities. With it, organizations can accelerate the results of various use cases – especially for smaller ad hoc, exploratory and departmental workloads.

VantageCloud Lake uses object storage like Amazon S3 at its core and can use isolated multi-compute clusters. The data is no longer stored in the fast but expensive and proprietary Teradata system, but in Amazon S3. VantageCloud Lake uses open file formats such as JSON and Apache Parquet.

Workload management ensures that independent compute clusters automatically scale based on system resource consumption and not based on query and user numbers. In addition, the workloads can be isolated in large environments. Scaling according to policies allows workloads to be limited.

VantageCloud Lake is part of the VantageCloud platform, of which there is an Enterprise variant in addition to the Lake version. Both versions include ClearScape Analytics, a set of advanced analytics features that also allow real-time data analysis. ClearScape Analytics also includes tools for data preparation and MLOps.

The Lake version is available now on AWS and will be available on other major cloud providers in 2023. Teradata’s website provides information on VantageCloud Lake and the complete cloud data and analytics platform VantageCloud.
