Apparently, we’ll see the release of a new Call of Duty in 2023. This might seem like a no-brainer given that the blockbuster franchise has been given an annual title since Call of Duty 2 (2005) hit the market.

However, rumors claimed that the latest game in the series, Modern Warfare 2, would have a 2-year cycle, leading to believe that the next Call of Duty would only arrive in 2024.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 arrived in November last year as the sequel to Modern Warfare (2019). With these games, Activision rebooted the main lineup that started with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007) and ended with Modern Warfare 3 (2011).

Activision has confirmed that it plans an “annual full premium release” for the Call of Duty franchise in 2023. That statement could be a cold shower for those who were waiting for a 2-year cycle for Modern Warfare 2, as the company must focus on in a new chapter of the franchise.

Previous rumors mentioned Modern Warfare 2 would receive a major expansion developed by Sledgehammer Games. Despite its popularity, many players bemoan Call of Duty’s annual release cycle.

With 2023 promising big games, it’s not surprising that Activision would be left out without its traditional launch. However, it’s exciting to think about the potential that Modern Warfare 2 would have for a new year of content, including a campaign expansion.
