iPhone 14 Pro Max, skyrocketing sales: what effects will it have on iPhone 15 “Ultra”?

Judging from the first sales data, it seems that the strategy is working, given that the pre-orders of the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus have not particularly convinced compared to those of the Pro, and the latest information shared by the well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo they offer us further insight into the issue it might have a direct impact also on Apple’s lineup during 2023.

According to the latest set of tweets from Kuoin fact, it appears that iPhone 14 Pro Max is accounting for over 60% of new orders for the Pro seriesgoing to increase the average selling price of iPhones for the fourth quarter of 2022, which will positively affect Apple’s last quarter of the year.

Although the price of iPhones in the US has remained unchanged, in most markets it has increased compared to last year, however, it seems that this has not had any negative effect on consumer choices, which have never before been flocking to the largest and most expensive model this year. At the moment there are no precise indicators that allow to explain the phenomenon, but it is likely that the inclusion of energy-intensive features such as the always on display are convincing more and more users to rely on the variant with greater autonomy, but not only.

However, the higher propensity to spend could have a direct impact on the characteristics of the 2023 lineup – as anticipated above -, since, according to Kuo, this could convince Apple to further diversify the variant Pro Max next year compared to the Pro modelwhich has not happened this year with the iPhone 14 Pro, which offers the same technical characteristics of the older brother.

We have seen that the latest rumors speak of the possible transition to an iPhone 15 Ultra, which could be distinguished by the presence of one periscope zoom and a 256 GB base memory cut, in order to further justify its higher list price. Although this could create a clear departure from the iPhone 15 Pro – which at that point would be a cross between the base model and the more performing one -, It is unclear whether Apple will continue this distinction over the years or whether it will be an exclusive feature for next year.

In fact, in the past, we have seen Apple occasionally adopt this strategyas in the case of the iPhone 7 Plus – the first with dual cameras and 3 GB of RAM, features absent on the iPhone 7 – or in that of the iPhone 12 Pro Max – equipped with Sensor Shift stabilization and a larger main sensor, also absent from iPhone 12 Pro -, and then standardize the specifications of the offer with subsequent generations. The question is therefore still to be settled for the long termbut it is likely that next year it will be only the most expensive model to offer all the most anticipated novelties.
