One of the biggest consumers of resources in terms of information stored on mobile phones is WhatsApp. Beyond the individual and group chats themselves, the usual sending of images, videos and audios ends up taking up a lot (sometimes too much space) in the device’s own memory.

The free spaces in the Cloud are scarce: iCloud only 5 Gb and Google Cloud 15 Gb

But those who have a Cloud backup of the information sent and received through WhatsApp may encounter the same problem by also saturating the meager space offered for free by Apple/iOS services (iCloud) and Google/Android (Google Drive), which is respectively a meager 5 and 15 Gb.

On the other hand, WhatsApp already establishes limits to the amount of data that backup copies in the Cloud can contain, as in the case of Google Drive, which forces us to be especially cautious.

In these cases, the solution is to deal with a file cleaning to that the WhatsApp backup occupies as little space as possible in the respective free Clouds of iOS and Android.

Some initial measures would include abandoning old groups, that have fallen into disuse or that no longer report any interest. With this measure, a lot of space can be freed up since, in addition to the text of the chats, all the files (images, videos, audios, documents…) associated with said groups are eliminated.

To avoid deleting, a first precautionary measure would be to avoid the download itself, so it can be prevented that the backup storage in the WhatsApp Cloud is saturated in the future by setting the option that prevents automatic download. It is achieved through the “Settings – Storage and data” route where three options are offered:

-Download with mobile data.

-Download with WiFi.

-In data roaming.

After choosing the preferred option, a menu allows mark the files you want to download in the case of mobile data (photos, audio, videos, documents), being able to mark that or those types of preferred data. If all are unchecked, none of them will be downloaded automatically.

Another measure would be to establish a setting in WhatsApp that prevents copies of received videos from being stored in the Cloud. It should be accessed through the route “Settings – Chats – Backup” unchecking the “Include videos” option. In this way, the backup will be considerably lightened since the videos are the contents that occupy the most data. In this case, it should be remembered that if you want to keep any of the videos received by WhatsApp, you will have to download or save it, or forward it to another platform (email, Telegram…).

That same job of lightening content can be done with the photos, GIFs, I-go messages and documents through the internal WhatsApp tool for file management, available through the path “Settings – Data storage – Manage storage”. In this section, the app indicates the space occupied by these documents and the space that remains available on the device. The space occupied by the chats is also reported, so that the “cleaning” can be directed to those who require the most space.

When accessing each conversation, all the files included in it are displayed in decreasing order of size. It will be enough to activate a long press on the ones that you want to discard to bring up the menu that allows you to delete them, there is also the option “Select all” in case you want to delete all of them in a single gesture. This will leave only the text inside the chat. Filter by date can also be applied, in case you prefer to delete the oldest files.
