Intel filed a patent that could confirm rumors that its future processors will use level 4 cache memory (L4 cache) again. As discovered by VideoCardz on Sunday (23), this patent exists for more than two years and describes the use of a new memory architecture to increase the performance of its chips.

Called “Adamantine”, this new cache architecture would add a fourth subsystem to the memory unit of Intel processors. Rumors indicate that the first line equipped with the new technology would be the “Meteor Lake”, that is, the 14th generation Core.

According to the patent, the cache of these processors will be installed in the package itself instead of being limited to the CPU block. This means that all blocks — including the CPU, GPU and SoC — will have access to the platform’s embedded memory.

The documents explain that the purpose of L4 cache will be to optimize system boot and increase the security of the computer’s memory, since all accesses will occur in the processor’s encrypted environment. In addition, caching can preserve data that speeds up the process of running and restarting applications.

It is clear that the new technology has the potential to debut in the next line when looking at the images attached to Intel’s patent. The diagram shows a processor with hybrid architecture — two high-performance “Redwood Cove” cores and eight low-power “Crestmont” cores, such that they should debut later this year.

There isn’t any information pointing to the use of the new technology to improve gaming performance, so Intel’s L4 cache may not be a direct response to Ryzen processors with AMD’s 3D V-Cache architecture. Instead, its applications would be limited to everyday computer tasks.

Intel has confirmed that the 14th generation Core processors will be announced in the second half of 2023, but has yet to reveal a specific release date.
