The point&click adventure “Return to Monkey Island” has a release date: It will be on the market on September 19th, just in time for International Talk Like a Pirate Day. It will be playable on PC and Nintendo Switch.
Those who pre-order Return to Monkey Island will get a completely useless set of horse armor for free – a parody of the legendary DLC for The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. “Hey, at least it’s not NFT,” the developers joke in a press release.
So the humor of “Monkey Island” is intact, but the new graphic style has caused controversy. The gameplay trailer released in June wasn’t well received by all fans of the older parts. Series creator Ron Gilbert reported hate mail about the new art style.
Adventure without verbs
In the new “Monkey Island” game, hobby pirate Guybrush Threepwood would like to solve the mystery of the island of the same name once again. Along the way, he meets old acquaintances. The developers around adventure icon Ron Gilbert had to fill LeChuck’s role as speaker because Earl Boen didn’t want to come out of retirement. The original voice actors lend their voices to other characters. Alongside Guybrush, Elaine and Murray also return with original voices.
Apart from the graphic style, “Monkey Island” should also be modernized in the new offshoot. The short command controls (“Open”, “Speak”, “Use”…) known from the earlier “Monkey Island” games are no longer used in “Return to Monkey Island”. A casual mode and a hint system should also prevent players from getting stuck on certain puzzles for too long.
