Philip Cheung won first prize: he spent more than two months in Ukraine for his series and documented the situation on the front line.

The Vonovia Award for Photography 2022, endowed with a total of 42,000 euros, was presented at the Sprengel Museum in Hanover. Three of the four award-winning artists dealt with the topic At home from a non-European perspective, the organizers announced on Thursday. The American Philip Cheung won the first prize (15,000 euros). Days of Destruction. To this end, he spent more than two months in Ukraine and documented the situation on the front line. The twelve pictures vividly showed the destruction, the loss of a home, but also resilience.

According to the information provided, the four photo series of the award winners will be included in the current exhibition home no. 5 (until October 30) integrated. From November 9th, the Sprengel Museum will also be showing the works of the shortlisted photographers in the exhibition home no. 6.

The German David Klammer (second prize – 12,000 euros) is said to be showing The line – What remained of the water Traces on the interior walls of residential buildings left behind by the flood of the century in 2021 on the Ahr – it is about intuitions of personal destinies. The Japanese Takako Kido (third prize – 10,000 euros) was convincing skinship – a Japanese word denoting a mother’s skin-to-skin relationship with her child. The German-American Francesca Hummler won the young talent prize (5000 euros) with the photo series Our dollhouse. It’s about experiences of racism.
