The iPhone 16 Pro will have Face ID technology under the screen according to The Elec

The iPhone 16 Pro will have the Face ID technology under the screen to offer a larger usable display area, according to the Korean newspaper The Elec.

Apple will place the necessary components for Face ID directly under the iPhone screen in 2024. When not in use, it will look like the normal area of the screen.

The report clarifies that the hole in the screen for the front camera will remain in the iPhone 16 Pro but the use of the screen will be improved.

The Elec also corroborates rumors that all four models in the iPhone 15 lineup will offer Dynamic Island, bringing the feature from the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max to the two standard models.

The report adds that once Apple has implemented Face ID technology under the screen, will adopt an under panel camera (UPC)thus removing all the screen cutouts currently present on the iPhone.

Roadmap of iPhone screens

This information coincides with the roadmap established by the screen analyst Ross Young in May 2022. Young outlined a cycle in which Apple will alternate each year between Pro and non-Pro models when it comes to introducing revised screen cutouts or new under-display technology:

The Pro models will be the first to receive display innovations of this kind, as first seen last year with the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 Pro, while the standard iPhone 14 models stuck with the same “notch.” than the iPhone 13.

This also means that each configuration of screen cutouts and bottom panel technology will persist for up to two generations on each iPhone before the device has a full usable screen area sometime around 2027.
