Currently, the Galaxy S22 series is divided between models with Snapdragon chips from Qualcomm (around 70%) and Exynos chips from Samsung Exynos (the remaining 30%). However, the Samsung Galaxy S23 will only have a Snapdragon chip, according to the famous analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. This is the second time we’ve heard that Samsung is going with Snapdragon, after a Korean publication teased in the spring that Samsung would not use Exynos in either the S23 or the upcoming S24 series. Kuo reveals that the reason for this change of heart is far from throttling or thermal management issues with the upcoming Exynos 2300 chip that is supposed to go in the S23. The problem has to do with Qualcomm’s 5G modem built into the upcoming SM8550 chipset (which will probably be called Snapdragon 8 Gen 2) which can hardly be replicated by anyone at the moment. At MWC 2022, Qualcomm announced the next generation of its 5G modem technology, the Snapdragon X70. Built using TSMC’s 4nm manufacturing method. Instead of increasing Gigabit download speeds, as it did with the previous generation Snapdragon X65, X60, X55 and X50, Qualcomm has decided to keep the same 10 Gigabit modem speed currently found in phones like the Galaxy S22 series. , and instead has focused on adding additional features and AI capabilities. Qualcomm claims that this is the world’s first 5G AI processor in an RF-modem system. Apple is trying to develop a 5G modem chip of its own, but has run into a set of Qualcomm patents around the technology that make it difficult for it. According to Kuo, Samsung cannot technologically match the upcoming SM8550 chip 5G modem that TSMC manufactures with its 4nm method, both in performance and power efficiency. As such, you may just decide to go for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, or whatever Qualcomm calls it. The big winner here is, of course, Qualcomm, which will sell many more high-end Snapdragon SoCs than it would have if Samsung released the Exynos 2300.
