A security service provider has tracked down almost 900 active phishing sites that want to access Amazon data. An increased risk on Amazon Prime Day.

IT researchers from the IT company AtlasVPN have collected data on phishing sites with the CheckPhish phishing and scam site scanner. They conclude that around 900 Amazon phishing sites were waiting for unsuspecting victims on Amazon Prime Day today.

Most phished target

Amazon is therefore the most imitated trademark among the phishing sites. In the past 90 days, 1,633 suspicious websites were found. Some of these websites have now been taken down, either by the fraudsters themselves or through various security measures. As a result, 897 fake websites were still active on Tuesday of this week.

Far behind are the other brands targeted by criminal phishers. The scammers primarily want access data for Walmart and Alibaba. Farther behind were UGG, Target, Nike and Home Depot in the survey.

The authors of the report give tips on how web users can recognize phishing sites and thus avoid an unwanted data leak. On Amazon Prime Day in particular, it is easier for cybercriminals to cheat phishing emails and advertising among the numerous legitimate offers.

Users should be careful with Google Ads, as fraudsters could misuse them to get a better ranking in Google searches. In addition, the address should be checked in the web browser: if it contains errors or strange symbols, the site should be left immediately. Fraudsters could use character sets with letters that look similar to the original address. In addition, grammatical and spelling mistakes are an alarm signal – fraudsters would hardly employ experts to proofread the content of the fake pages.
