Apple has yet to adopt under-display camera technology, but a patent filed by it indicates that we are getting closer and closer to seeing an iPhone without a notch or Dynamic Island. As reported by Patently Apple, the document shows a version of the iPhone with sensors for Face ID hidden under the display. See how they will work.

The patent says that the cameras used by Face ID can be hidden under the screen by using a display that can selectively disable pixels to allow light to pass through to the sensors.

Transparent windows can be shifted by a random amount in a random direction relative to a grid definition point and/or can be randomly rotated to increase non-periodicity. A transparency gradient can be formed between the transparent windows and the surrounding opaque part of the screen. Transparent windows can be defined by non-linear edges.

As we can see below, the sensors would be below all layers of the screen, but for this Apple would need to significantly reduce the number of layers, as they can prevent the passage of up to 80% of light, greatly impairing readability.

Furthermore, the patent cites some of the sensors that could be hidden under the iPhone screen, such as cameras, fingerprint reading, pressure sensors, position, orientation, LiDAR, humidity, depth, eye tracking and more.

In this way, the application of this technology would bring the end of the notch, the Dynamic Island and the return of Touch ID to the iPhone. However, it is worth noting that this is just a patent, so there is no guarantee that Apple will follow this path, as analysts indicate that an iPhone with Touch ID under the screen should only debut in 2026.
