Apple delays AR glasses and focuses on cheaper mixed reality headset

It is estimated that Apple will introduce its first generation mixed reality headset later this year. It should offer virtual (VR) and augmented reality (AR) capabilities, with a heavy focus on the technology first. However, the model of AR glasses that resemble ordinary glasses seems to have been postponed indefinitely by the companysince the costs of technological advances to develop it are making the process unfeasible.

Because of this, the mixed reality headset has become a more affordable product. According to Mark Gurman, from Bloomberg, Apple estimated that the launch of the headphones would be for 2022 and, thus, the AR glasses would arrive on the market in 2023. However, the debut was postponed to at least 2025.

The headset, to be released between late 2023 and 2024, can cost US$1,500 (R$7,614)half the price of what was expected for such a first generation model.

Apple’s AR glasses are intended to be lightweight and easy to carry. It is a contender to be the replacement for the iPhone, bringing the phone’s features into the user’s field of vision.

Analyzing the prototype, some specialists point out as a problem the fact that the device puts the battery in the user’s pocket, instead of in the frame of the glasses. There still does not seem to be a clear logistics on how this recharge can occur and not disrupt the user experience.

But all this is speculation, since Apple never officially announced this technology and, therefore, will not publicly explain the development problems that delay the launch. It’s important to remember that developing this technology is one thing and thinking about it being mass commercialized is another.
