Samsung releases May 2023 security patches on the Galaxy S23 range

With the usual punctuality that has set her apart for years now, after starting last week with the Galaxy A10eSamsung has released a new firmware update for the Galaxy S23 range which includes the May 2023 security patches. Also improved stability and performance of Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+ and Galaxy S23 Ultra as well as fixed some bugs.

FIXED OVER 70 BUGS

The new firmware, identified with the acronym S918BXXS1AWD1, was initially released in Europe, including Italy, but should be progressively extended to other countries as well. It is possible to check the availability of the security update by going to the system settings and clicking on the “Software update” item.

With these security patches, Samsung claimed to fixed over 70 problems: of these, six (4 in all Android phones and 2 in Samsung phones) fix critical vulnerabilities; another 56 security fixes were rated as “high” criticality. Samsung has also fixed 10 security issues it calls “moderate”.

Two fixes included in Google’s security patches have already been fixed by Samsung and released in last April’s security patch. A fix made by Google, however, is not applicable to Samsung devices.

Some of the security vulnerabilities found in Galaxy smartphones and tablets have been found in the FactoryTest function, ActivityManagerService, Theme Manager, GearManagerStub and Tips app. Security flaws have also been found in the Shannon modem found in Exynos processors, the bootloader, telephony framework, call settings components, and AppLock access control.

CAMERA NOT AFFECTED (FOR NOW)

In recent weeks there have been rumors about the release of a new update that will further improve camera performance even in low light conditions on the Galaxy S23 range. However, since this update it weighs only 350 MB it would seem unlikely that it would even contain these fixes.

It is probable that, after the firmware arrived in early April with which camera performance has already been improved, Samsung will release a new update during the month of May.
