Based on a Qualcomm reference design, Razer is developing a mobile gaming console. The Android device is designed to play games via cloud gaming.
After Logitech, Razer also wants to build its own mobile console for cloud gaming: Razer has teased a 5G handheld based on Android with the US mobile communications provider Verizon. A Verizon PR manager shared a short video on Twitter.
It shows a few detailed shots of the gaming device, which is apparently based on a Qualcomm reference design. The US company presented a developer kit called Snapdragon G3x together with Razer last December, which independent manufacturers can use to build their own Android mobile consoles.
The devkit and probably the finished Razer console is suitable for running Android games locally, but can also be used to stream PC and console titles in cooperation with cloud services. A prototype from Qualcomm has a battery with 6000 mAh and an OLED panel with 120 Hertz and a FullHD webcam – what is in the Razer device is still unclear. The peripheral manufacturer wants to reveal more information on October 15th.
Logitech G Cloud
The comparison with the Logitech G Cloud, which was announced last week, is already obvious. The G Cloud runs with Android 11. Compared to a conventional cell phone, however, the controls are directly integrated: there are two asymmetrical thumbsticks on the right and left of the IPS display, as well as the four input buttons known from gamepads and a control pad. There are two shoulder buttons on the left and right on the top of the device.
At 7 inches, the G Cloud’s display is as large as the Steam Deck’s screen. It supports touch and has a classic FullHD resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels, slightly larger than Valve’s handheld. Logitech specifies the brightness as 450 nits, the refresh rate is 60 Hertz.
In the US, Logitech is offering its G Cloud for $350, and the handheld will be available from October 17th. It is still unclear whether and when Logitech would also like to offer the G Cloud in Germany. Android handhelds have so far been made by smaller Chinese manufacturers, while large companies have not yet dared to use a mobile Android console.
