The Apple boss is once again practicing as a Facebook critic: In an interview he questions the strategy of Mark Zuckerberg’s company.

After Tim Cook had already emphasized once again last week how important Augmented Reality (AR) seems to him as a (soon) future technology, he is now following up on Facebook’s Metaverse plans. In an interview with the Dutch medium Bright, he criticized the designation and said that it did not reach the average customer.

Facebook, which changed its name to “Meta Platforms” almost a year ago at the behest of CEO Mark Zuckerberg, sees the future of the Internet as a metaverse. The term itself comes from the science fiction novel “Snow Crash” by Neal Stephenson, which was published in 1992 and actually reflects a dystopia. Apple boss Cook now said he doesn’t believe in the terminology. “I think it’s always important for people to understand what something is. And I’m really not sure the average person can tell what the metaverse is,” he explained.

Cook also doesn’t believe that people would want to spend their lives in such a construct. “It’s something you can really immerse yourself in. And that can be used in a good way. But I don’t think you want to live your whole life like that.” Virtual reality applications are suitable for certain periods of time, but not for good communication. “So I’m not against it, but that’s my view,” said the Apple boss.

Once again, Cook thinks the expansion of augmented reality is more important. “AR apps already exist in the App Store, but the possibilities are going to go much, much further,” the Apple CEO told Bright. “I think AR is a profound technology that will affect everything. Imagine if you could suddenly teach with AR and demonstrate things in this way.” Medical applications are also exciting. “Like I said, one day we’re really going to look back and think about how we once lived without AR.”

Apple itself has been working on its own headsets for AR applications for a long time. It is still unclear when the “Reality Pro” will actually appear. The technology should already be available, but the group has initially postponed the introduction to next year. In addition, the first devices will probably only be offered to developers or prosumers, as their price is likely to be significantly higher than other AR devices on the market.
