iOS 16 brings a complete redesign of the lock screen, which not only allows you to place widgets but is also capable of create a 3D layered effect with our photos.

After selecting an image from our gallery, iOS 16 extracts the main subject — even if it wasn’t captured in Portrait mode — and splits the image into two layers: subject and background.

To create a 3D effect, places the subject in front of the time and the background of the image behind it, so that the time appears to be embedded in the photo.

The best results are achieved when the photo in question has plenty of free space above the person’s head, as otherwise it is not possible to place the head partially covering the hour — it would cover it completely, and rather than do that, Apple prefers to place the entire photo after the time.

It is possible to choose one photo or several so that the lock screen alternates between all of them. Below you can see some examples.

What other designs are there?

In addition to placing photos on the lock screen, Apple has also introduced a set of screens that vary depending on the astronomical and weather conditions of your current location, a screen that repeats a pattern of your favorite Emoji and some Collections that show designs such as Pride, dedicated to Pride.
