House of the Dragon, the first Game of Thrones spinoff series, has already become one of the most acclaimed television productions of all time, with the first season being a true ratings success.
Earlier this week, Ryan Condall, executive producer and co-creator of the series, left fans disheartened by indicating that the second season of the series could only premiere in 2024. To the dismay of many, HBO confirmed the claim.
Casey Bloys, HBO’s Chief Content Officer, spoke to Variety and stated that it is best to wait for the second season of House of the Dragon only for 2024.
Filming for the new season begins in early 2023 and after a long production it still has to go through post-production before they even start thinking about a premiere date that can be revealed to the public.
According to Bloys, the series is incredibly important, as it has managed to attract a large number of new subscribers and increase the time they spend consuming HBO content and although they understand the need for a second season of the series for the brand, this will take time.
In addition to the scale of production, there are several issues surrounding the planning phase of the recordings. Bloys says he’s not hiding the game and there’s no plan to surprise, they just want to be cautious.

The House of the Dragon: Season 2 may only be released in 2024
Last Sunday (23), HBO released the last episode of A Casa do Dragão, which even though it was leaked days before the release, managed to be successful and dominated social networks.
Contrary to the fears of some Game of Thrones fans, the new series started with absurd potential and many are already eager for more, but it looks like it will still be quite some time before the second season is released.
Ryan Condall, executive producer and co-creator of House of the Dragon, spoke to Variety and confirmed that filming for the second season of the series will begin in early 2023, but does not guarantee that the release will happen as early as next year. This is something that is not yet guaranteed.
Condall didn’t say much about the second year of the series, but the fact that it doesn’t guarantee a release for 2023 makes us assume that it will only happen in 2024. Given the scale of this production and post-production, especially with the events that will be adapted in season two, it’s understandable that the series will take more than a year to come back.
Condall, who leads the series following the departure of Miguel Sapochnik, further said that it is a great benefit to know how the story written by George RR Martin ends, allowing them to helm the adaptation and even change some things without compromising the end result.
