As we reported just seven days ago, OpenAI has released the ChatGPT’s first official app: well, today the first unofficial data indicate that the app has been downloaded nearly 500,000 times, despite being only on the App Store and limited to the United States. This indication is given by the analytical company Data.AI. It is worth remembering that, unlike Google’s Play Store, Apple’s virtual store does not provide official indications, not even by range, on this metric, so we can only hope for direct communications from OpenAI.

Assuming the data is right, however, that would be about the second best debut for a mobile app is in 2023 (which of course is still ongoing) both in 2022. In the first five days, only Truth Social, the platform founded by Donald Trump, also initially exclusive only to iOS, did better.

It is also interesting to note that the integration of more or less similar AI software had caused a significant download spike also for two Microsoft apps, the Edge browser and the Bing search engine. We recall that OpenAI is heavily financed by Microsoft, and that thanks to an exclusive agreement the company can exploit the model on which ChatGPT is based, GPT-4, in its software. Below are a few more tables that also take into consideration the Play Store in different scenarios. Let’s mention one figure above all: between Android and iOS, in the United States alone, in May (which is not over yet) Bing totaled almost 700,000 downloads. Bing!

In recent months we have seen the swarm of countless unofficial apps and clones of ChatGPT on both mobile distribution platforms, but Data.AI’s estimate is an indication of how interested users are in the original product. And let’s just imagine the enormous download potential that the software could have if it is also made available on Android and globally. In this regard, we recall that according to some rumors the chatbot could expand to 11 other markets in a relatively short time. For now, Chat with Ask AI remains the most popular app, which claims to have over 15 million users and is based on GPT-4 and the ChatGPT API. This app is also available on Android, but always limited to the United States only. It’s easy to imagine that he won’t be on top for much longer.
