Microsoft has just released the June 2023 Update for Windows 11 Insider users, which brings several improvements and a very interesting feature: support for file sharing between Android and Windows. Build 2305.40000.4.0 brings the new version of Windows Subsystem for Android that brings this and other improvements.

According to Microsoft, file sharing has been added, as it is one of the most requested functions by Windows 11 users. In the list of changes, the company explains the feature as follows:

We’re excited to announce that Windows Subsystem for Android can now share your Windows user folders, such as Documents and Pictures, with Subsystem, so that scenarios like uploading a photo to a social media app or editing a video in an app creative work perfectly.

The feature enables file sharing only from the “C:\Users\your user” folder, which will be shown within the “/sdcard/Windows” folder on the Android system. Also, executable files (.exe) will not be displayed to ensure user safety.

The update also brings support for dragging, dropping, copying and pasting files between File Explorer and Android apps. If you wish, you can disable these features by accessing the Windows Subsystem for Android Settings, as the feature is enabled by default.

Finally, the new version of Windows Subsystem for Android brings the following improvements:

  • Android 13 security updates;
  • Chromium WebView updated to version 113;
  • Security update for the Linux kernel;
  • Improved compatibility for camera hardware;
  • Improved WiFi API compatibility;
  • Applications that specify android.hardware.type.pc in the manifest can now receive raw input events.
  • New design of Windows Subsystem for Android Settings menu.

It is worth remembering that it is already possible to share files with Android cell phones through Windows using the Nearby Share application from Google, which is already available for the Microsoft system.
