Qualcomm continues to prepare its chip for laptops: the rival for Apple's M1 will arrive
qualcomm continues to prepare its chip for laptops: the rival

Qualcomm announced the purchase of Nuvia at the beginning of 2021, and shortly after it would reveal its purpose with that move: to create chips for laptops that will rival Apple’s M1.

Now those responsible have confirmed that they are still working on that goal, and although they will probably have prototypes available for manufacturers in 2022, the commercialization of these chips will not be produced until the end of 2023.

Qualcomm does not depend on itself: Windows for ARM must improve

As Ars Technica points out, when Qualcomm bought Nuvia it did so in part to acquire talent: that company had been founded by former employees of the chip design team at Apple.

Also for his advances in the development of ARM chips for servers, but all that experience was perfect for raise a competitor for the Apple M1 chip family that is now the basis of all its equipment.

The ARM chips that dominate mobile devices have fallen short of conquering desktop computing in the Windows world. There are computers based precisely on Qualcomm chips, but its benefits do not reach those of the M1 And there is another problem: Windows for ARM is still not a product that Microsoft pays special attention to.

That may change by the end of 2023. The promise is remarkable, though by then it’s logically likely that Apple has even announced a hypothetical M3.

We will see if Qualcomm and Nuvia meet expectations: if so, the firm could hold a winning hand to attack the elusive market for Windows-based ARM PCs and laptops.
