After switching to the new iPhone 14 Pro on iOS 16.0.1, the system data keeps growing until it blocks the entire storage space of the iPhone. How can I clear the space again?
You can query the size of the system data under iOS in the settings under “General/iPhone memory”. Scroll all the way down the screen. If the system data is significantly larger than 10 GB, you should act. With us, the system data grew inexorably from a little more than 10 GB to over 80 GB within a few hours after each restart of the iPhone, until the entire memory was occupied.
We identified the search function of iOS as the cause. This indexes the content of apps in the background so that they appear in the results of a system-wide search. iOS stores the indexes in the memory of the iPhone, so that the system data occupies more and more storage space.
To tame rampant indexing, go to Siri & Search in iOS settings and scroll down to the list of installed apps. Open each app settings and disable “Show content in search”. Then restart the iPhone, for example by pressing volume up and down in quick succession and then long pressing the power button.
After the restart, the system data should occupy significantly less than 10 GB. Now you can selectively turn content search back on for individual apps. Notice if the system data is growing. If so, switch off the content search of the corresponding app again. Apps that handle large amounts of data such as mail, photos, files, messengers and browsers are particularly vulnerable.
