Gmail gained a new design based on Material You in July 2022 and it is still possible to return to the traditional layout, but according to Google this option is out of date. A post on the official Google Workspace Updates website revealed when the new design will become permanent for all Gmail users.
Google claims that the new interface will become the default for all users by offering a streamlined design that puts Meet and Chats on the left side of the screen so they can be easily accessed compared to the previous layout.
The implementation of the new layout in Gmail without the possibility of returning to the previous one will be done in two stages: one for those who already use the new version (quick release) and another for other users. Check the dates:
- Quick release: new permanent layout in 15 days;
- Other Users: Gradual rollout of the new design starting November 29.
In this way, the new Gmail design will become permanent for all Google Workspace users until the end of 2022, with the exception of those using Google Workspace Essentials, who will still be able to use the old version for now.
