Until now, ChatGPT had been presented in the chatbot format, but OpenAI does not want this to be the ceiling of the Artificial Intelligence tool and is already working to turn it into the voice assistant that retires Alexa or Siri.
The mobile application shows in its latest beta a first preview look to the way in which the new ChatGPT voice assistant will be implemented.

ChatGPT is working to become a default voice assistance app. This would allow users use ChatGPT instead of Google Assistant or other options like Bixby or Alexa but it is not available yet.

At the moment, OpenAI has developed a new quick configuration tile for ChatGPT that allows a faster access to AI assistant service without having to open the entire application.
This new mosaic menu opens a new overlay user interface that appears above any app you’re currently using. The user interface takes a moment to “connect” each time you activate it, but it’s usually ready to start listening in just a few seconds. The white circle turns into a cloud when a message is processed, which is automatically sent when you stop talking or if you touch the white circle.
With the latest ChatGPT beta update, you can now add this shortcut. This overlay can appear on any screen, allowing you to talk to ChatGPT no matter what app you’re in. Note that you still can’t set ChatGPT as your default assistant app, which means you can’t invoke it by long-pressing the home button or power button, but that’s being worked on. The new shortcut appears in ChatGPT for Android version 1.2024.017 and 1.2024.018, which is currently rolling out via the beta channel.
ChatGPT wants to see, hear and talk
These new functionalities are part of the evolution process that OpenAI is taking its tool. As announced in September of last year, it will evolve by adding new functions and new voice and image capabilities in ChatGPT. These new means of communication with the boom of AI applied to generative text offer a new, more intuitive type of interface by allowing you to have a voice conversation or show ChatGPT what you are talking about through the camera.
When you talk to ChatGPT and have it respond you can use your voice as a link to start a conversation with your assistant, to which you can select different types of voices. Some examples of utilities provided by OpenAI were conversations while traveling, asking for a story to put the youngest members of the family to sleep, or asking for a definitive opinion in a debate that is being had at the table.
The new voice capability is powered by a new text-to-speech model, capable of generating human-like audio from just text and a few seconds of voice sample. Also used Whisper, the voice recognition system from OpenAI, open source, to transcribe your spoken words into text.
