The arrival of the first is expected by the end of next year MacBook equipped with an OLED display. This is what the authoritative analyst predicted Ming-Chi Kuo of TF Securities which, however, did not specify whether the MacBook in question will belong to the Pro or Air range.

Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), is more convinced that this type of panel will initially be used on the MacBook Air and the 11- and 12.9-inch iPad Pros, the latter featuring a mini-LED display with ProMotion as well as the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros.

Unlike LCD displays with mini-LEDs, OLED displays have pixels that do not require backlighting, which offers a number of advantages: a decidedly reduced thickness, a better contrast ratio and lower power consumption. On the other hand, they tend to suffer from the so-called “burn in”, a phenomenon whereby images viewed for long periods of time tend to “burn” the pixels creating permanent overlays.

While Apple is planning a transition to OLED technology on MacBooks and iPads, the transition from OLED to MicroLED on Apple Watch could begin as early as next year. The long-term goal, in fact, would be to use this technology on all its devices. Precisely in this sense, according to what reported by Bloomberg, the internal development of MicroLED panels would have already started for some time.

These displays, already used by other manufacturers, make it possible to combine the advantages of mini-LEDs in terms of brightness, chromatic fidelity and absence of “burn in”, with the absolute contrast offered by OLEDs, completely eliminating the “blooming” effect present on mini-LEDs.
