Google recently hinted at a potential change to the way we control call and notification ringtone volume on Android 13 QPR3 or 14.

Currently both volumes are controlled by a single slider, but an ADB command found in Android 13 QPR2 Beta 1 in December allowed the creation of separate “Ringtone Volume” and “Notification Volume” sliders in the Settings > Sound menu and vibration. Added to the media, call, and alarm volume controls, we would have a total of five sliders.

While the ADB command continued to work, QPR2’s stable release in March did not include the separate volume sliders. There were also no changes in QPR3 (Beta 3). However, Google has updated the topic “[Solicitação de recurso] Allow separate volume sliders for notifications and ringtones!” in the Android issue tracker created as of December 2021 with the following message:

The requested feature will be available in a future release.

Counting 47 comments, the status of the thread is now “Fixed”.

It is unclear when the separate notification/ringtone volume change will arrive in the stable Android 13 QPR3 release. It could be released in June or come with Android 14. The feature is currently not live on Android 13 QPR3 Beta 3 or Android 14 Beta 1.1.

An Android 14 release and subsequent beta seems more likely at this stage of the development cycle. But it’s still technically viable for Android 13, which will stop getting major updates after the June release.

This update will be a quality of life improvement for those who prefer to hear notifications but not incoming calls. Separate volume sliders allow users to customize their sound settings to their preferences. Overall, this change will improve the user experience for Android users and make it easier to manage your device’s sound settings.
