Funcom announced a new online game in the “Dune” universe at Gamescom. According to the developers, “Dune Awakening” combines the gameplay of survival games with the social aspects that you are used to from MMO games.
The setting is the desert planet Arrakis from Frank Herbert’s sci-fi universe. “Thousands” of players should share a desert world, the developers promise on the game’s Steam page.
At the Gamescom opening show, Funcom only released a short render trailer for “Dune Awakening”, which hardly allows any conclusions to be drawn about the actual gameplay. Among other things, you can see a sandworm that you can possibly ride.
Survive and collect spice
According to Funcom, the aim of the game is primarily survival: the still suit has to be maintained and shelters have to be built against sandstorms. In addition to dunes, players also get ruins and the wrecks of spaceships. You can collect spices that unlock new skills. Factions should also be part of the game.
There is no release date yet, and gameplay scenes have not yet been released. The game will be released for PC, Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X.
“Dune Awakening” is the second “Dune” game from publisher Funcom after the strategy game “Dune Spice Wars”. For “Dune Awakening” Funcom is working together with the Hanover software company NUKKLEAR. The development is financed, among other things, by 1.6 million euros from federal games funding, reports the industry magazine Gameswirtschaft.
