Apple launches 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro with new M2 Pro and M2 Max processors

Apple announced on Tuesday (17) new models of advanced notebooks focused on more complex professional applications. The 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro will be equipped with the brand’s most powerful processors, the M2 Pro and M2 Max, which succeed the M1 Pro and M1 Max introduced in 2021.

screen and design

With an identical design to the previous generation notebooks, the new models are equipped with the same Liquid Retina XDR screen, maintaining the high resolution of 3,024 x 1,964 pixels (14-inch model) and 3,456 x 2,234 pixels (16-inch model). On both options, the constant brightness level is 1,000 nits peaking at 1,600 nits in HDR.

The panel has the same notch as the 2021 models, and unfortunately, there are no sensors for Face ID unlocking. There’s just a FaceTime HD 1080p camera for image processor-optimized video calling with embedded computational video. Ultrathin, the models are up to 1.68 centimeters thick.

The notebooks are equipped with ProMotion technology for adaptive refresh rates of up to 120 Hz, ensuring good maximum fluidity for video playback and reduced frequency for scenarios where battery life is a priority.

hardware and performance

Apple promises rendering performance up to 6 times greater than the most powerful model of MacBook Pro with an Intel processor. The energy efficiency of the new devices is highlighted, since can achieve long autonomy of up to 22 hours of video playback — a family record.

The MacBook Pro with M2 Pro guarantees high performance with its 10-core and 12-core versions, as well as integrated graphics with up to 19 cores. This hardware integrates 40 billion transistors and works with up to 32 GB of unified memory. According to Apple, the chip is up to 40% faster than the M1 Pro.

The M2 Max guarantees twice as many graphics cores and 67 billion transistors — 10 billion more than its predecessor — to break the barrier of 400 GB/s of bandwidth in its unified memory, which is 4 times more than the M2 . Its cache is larger than the M2 Pro’s built-in storage, so apps open almost instantly.

Like the previous generation, the models have versions with an SSD of up to 8 TB, but thanks to the M2 Max, the notebooks can be purchased with unified memory up to 96 GBgiving much more room for multitasking and rendering animations than its previous versions with support for up to 64 GB.

sound and connectivity

The new MacBook Pro models have the same sound system as their predecessors, so there’s a set of six hi-fi stereo speakers and force-canceling woofers. Spatial Audio with Dynamic Head Tracking is supported using 3rd generation AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max.

The M2 Pro and M2 Max enable Wi-Fi 6E connectivity, which guarantees up to twice the connection speed of previous generation models. Its support for external displays has evolved, and now it can connect to 8K @ 60 Hz or 4K @ 240 Hz displays.

There are three Thunderbolt 4 ports for connecting peripherals with high data transfer speeds, an SDXC card slot and a MagSafe 3 port. To ensure system security, the models have a Touch ID button.

price and availability

The new notebooks are now available at Apple’s online store in the United States and 26 other countries, including Europe. The maximum configurations of the most advanced model cost BRL 71 thousand, not including pre-installed software. Check out the starting prices for each model:

  • 14-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro: Starting at $11,999
  • 14-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Max: Starting at $16,999
  • 16-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro: Starting at $19,999
