The new Xiaomi 14 and 14 Pro have a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip They are the first Xiaomi phones to use its new operating system
Now yes, Xiaomi has presented its new family of flagships, the company’s highest range of mobile phones for next year, and includes very interesting changes that go beyond simply hardware improvements. The new Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro debut with a combination of new hardware and new software, thanks to the company’s new operating system, HyperOS.
The evolution between the previous generation, the Xiaomi 13, and the new Xiaomi 14, it is supported by three main pillars: the most powerful Qualcomm chip to date, an even better camera from Leica, and a different operating system. Is it worth upgrading from Xiaomi 13 to Xiaomi 14? We leave that decision to you, but below you will find everything that changes, which we hope will help you when considering purchasing one of the new mobile phones from the Chinese technology giant.
More power and an extremely bright screen
As expected, especially after the recent presentation of the new Qualcomm chip, the new Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro change the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 of the previous models for the new ones Snapdragon 8 Gen 3which in essence is a 30% faster than the Gen 2 and even surpasses Apple’s A17 Pro in benchmarks. Additionally, the Gen 3 NPU is 98% faster than the previous generation. It is undoubtedly the star chip that we will see in the highest-end mobile phones in 2024.
This processor is accompanied by up to 16 GB of RAM in the 14 Pro model, exceeding the maximum of 12 GB of RAM included in the previous generation. In addition, it also has a maximum storage capacity of 1 TB, again, exceeding the 512 GB included in the Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 13 Pro in their versions with more storage.
The screen of the Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro also includes a novelty that sounds impressive: The maximum brightness of its screens is up to 3000 nits making them among the brightest screens on the market, a feature in which several manufacturers have already shown interest, exceeding 2000 nits maximum screen brightness on certain models.
Otherwise, the size of the screens does not vary between generations, with 6.36” and 6.73” for the 14 and 14 Pro, respectively. However, Xiaomi’s new high-end models have made a leap in the resolution of their screens.
A completely new operating system and camera improvements
During the presentation of the Xiaomi 14, the company not only presented its new highest-end phones, but also what will be the present and future for the software of all Xiaomi products, and not just its phones. Its name is HyperOS and it will be available on both Xiaomi smartphones like on your smart watches, speakers and more.
HyperOS is the replacement for MIUI, and it’s more than just an Android custom layer. This operating system is developed on Android and Vela, a system that Xiaomi created for its IoT devices. The company promises better performance on devices with this operating system, and of course, its interface also has a renewed look.
Although the Xiaomi 14 are the first smartphones to have this OS, many other devices will receive HyperOS, it is even expected that the Xiaomi 13, among others, will be updated.
The Xiaomi 14 Pro camera, from Leica, is one of the most interesting aspects of this new generation of smartphones, one that we can’t wait to try in person. Its main sensor has a variable aperture which starts from f/1.42 and can reach f/4.0, resulting in considerable improvements in blur, that bokeh for portraits.
Xiaomi also promises a 2x digital zoom without loss of quality, and other improvements in a generation that has, at least on paper, the best cameras they have developed together with Leica to date, located in a huge rear module. Finally, the front camera has a 32 MP sensor just like the previous generation.
