RTX 3000: Nvidia removes cryptocurrency mining limitations, but that’s normal

Nvidia has just announced the lifting of restrictions on its RTX 3000 in terms of cryptocurrency mining. In fact, the LHR driver will no longer limit the hash rate of graphics cards, which will again be able to mine in complete peace of mind. So, towards a new shortage? Not really, because miner interest in GPUs just dropped for one simple reason.

Remember: the year 2021 had been eventful for gamers, who were trying somehow (and still a little today) to get an RTX 3000 at a decent price. The shortage of components had driven prices up, but it wasn’t the only one. Cryptocurrency miners were also responsible. Indeed, the least stock was often emptied by the latter in order to build the most profitable farm possible.

Finally, in May 2021, Nvidia decided to react by launching, on the one hand, graphics cards specially designed for mining and, on the other hand, by limiting the hash rate of its graphics cards thanks to LHR technology. The solution had relatively mixed success, but still had the merit of lowering miners’ demand for GPUs. However, today, Nvidia has decided to backtrack and lift all its restrictions.

Why Nvidia is removing anti-cryptomining measures from its RTX 3000s

As one Reddit user spotted, Nvidia’s latest driver for Windows and Linux disables LHR. In fact, the RTX 3000 will regain all their cryptocurrency mining capabilities in the days to come. Has the builder lost its mind? In reality, it’s quite the opposite. Indeed, a small event shook up the world of cryptocurrencies a few weeks ago.

We are of course talking about The Merge, the historical update of the Ethereum blockchain. In addition to having a huge impact on the way cryptocurrency works, The Merge has also put an end to cryptocurrency mining, switching to the proof-of-stake method. While Ethereum was certainly not the only cryptocurrency to be mined with a graphics card, it was undoubtedly the most popular. In other words, the removal of the LHR should not trigger a crowd movement among miners.
