The custom sound recognition feature in iOS 16 is quite handy for being able to receive notifications from your iPhone instantly when the device notices critical sounds that you can’t hear. Here you can find out everything about how to activate and use this option on your device with iOS 16.

Once you turn on active noise cancellation, everything becomes much easier to hear on your headphones. However, on many occasions this can really become an impediment to hearing the other sounds that need you to be aware of. Now, thanks to custom sound recognition in iOS 16, you’ll be able to always keep these important sounds in mind through notifications.

This feature is under the concept of accessibility, although you can get the most out of it with other concepts of use. You can see below how to configure this option in your iOS 16.

Configure the custom sound recognition option in iOS 16

  • The first thing you’ll need to know is that you need to have the feature active in the first place.
  • You will have to enter the Settings app on your iPhone, then slide down to tap on Accessibility.
  • Scroll down again and click on Sound recognition.
  • Click on Sound Recognition and you have to activate the function. Immediately after, your iPhone will proceed to download the necessary software for the function.

Once you have successfully activated the function, you will have the possibility to customize the sounds that you cannot hear. See below how to customize the sounds to recognize.

  • Go to the Sound recognition menu and click on Sounds.
  • A list of familiar sounds will appear that you can quickly identify. Click on any option to activate it and have your device listen to those sounds, as well as apply a tone to the notification you receive.

In case the sound you want to recognize does not appear in the default list, it will also be possible to customize the sound you want. You can configure the noises of electrical appliances or some other sound by clicking on Custom Alarm or Appliance or Custom Ringtone.

  • Select the desired alarm, device or doorbell and proceed to label the sound.
  • Then you will have to “show” the sound directly on your iPhone. Just leave the sound alone and allow the device to record it five times.
  • Once you finish the five recordings, just pay attention to the instructions on the screen so that your sound is fully registered along with the notification and alert.

You can quickly access sound recognition from the Control Center. Here it will be easier to manage your sounds and activate or deactivate sound recognition
