Tesla presents a battery that could have a useful life of 100 years

Within the electric car sector, the battery has become an element on which manufacturers have focused their efforts to make it as efficient as possible, both in autonomy, charging process and useful life.

It is in the latter where a scientific research team, led by Jeff Dan, has been working with Tesla for years on the development of a battery that they can provide with a useful life of 1.6 million kilometers, before its chemistry enter a state of advanced degradation.

However, this time the team is making headlines for another related project, where through an article they announced the creation of a battery endowed with a nickel-based chemistry which would greatly exceed the battery mentioned above, also maintaining the energy density of NCM (nickel manganese and cobalt) for longer.

The published document raises complex details related to the potential chemistry of a nickel-based battery and how it has characteristics that would give it the ability to last up to 100 years in the appropriate conditions.

Likewise, the potentialities present in this battery chemistry to compete with the LFP battery cells in terms of having a much longer useful life are explained, as well as the possibility of preserving the properties of the NCM nickel-rich chemistries, the which would offer higher energy density and therefore greater autonomy in equal energy capacity.

This is how the cells developed under the NCM nickel chemistry showed a high energy retention capacity without experiencing degradation after being subjected to numerous charge and discharge cycles.

However, the research group stressed that ensuring the battery has a 100-year lifespan will also depend on it continuing to operate at a controlled temperature of 25°C.

This achievement is important as an alternative to the scarcity of raw materials, also helping to significantly reduce production costs and the selling price of an electric car.
