According to the Communications Regulatory Commission of Colombia (CRC), during the fourth quarter of 2021 mobile voice subscribers increased by 10.9% compared to the same period in 2020.

This conclusion was presented in the report of the entity called Data Flash 2022-012 on Mobile Telephony, with the information at the end of 2021 of the service reported by the providers that are in Colombia.

Thus, 75 million users were identified and despite the growth in the number of subscribers, the income of mobile telephony operators and traffic decreased in the same period. Revenues fell by 13.3% to reach 603 billion pesos, while traffic fell by 14.4% to reach 37.9 billion minutes processed.

According to the CRC, revenue from the postpaid modality in December 2021 represents 66.2% of the total mobile telephony service, 3.4 percentage points more than the same month in 2020, and presented a negative variation of 8.4 % compared to the last month of the previous year.

Revenues from the prepaid modality in December 2021 represent 33.8% of the total mobile telephony service and presented a negative variation of 21% compared to the same month of the previous year.

What happens with Virtual Mobile Operators (MVNO)

Virtual Mobile Operators (MVNO) are those that do not have their own network infrastructure, so they must access the services of companies that do have one of them. An example is Móvil Éxito or Virgin Mobile.

According to the national report, OMV were the ones that presented a greater decrease with 42.2%; while the revenues of the Mobile Network Operators (MNO) for this service fell by 12.5% ​​compared to the same period of the previous year.

Regarding minutes processed, in the fourth quarter of 2021, virtual operators had an increase of 12.4%, in contrast to network operators, which had a decrease of 14.7% compared to the same period of the previous year.

According to the CRC, the average income per minute for the last quarter of 2021 was $15.9 and presented a growth of 1.3% compared to the fourth quarter of 2020. For its part, the average income per user was $8,031 and presented a decrease of 21.8% compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

The figures on the average traffic per subscriber show that it stood at 505 minutes for the fourth quarter of 2021, presenting a decrease of 22.8% compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

“These reports that we publish in our open data portal arise as a result of the ICT market monitoring process carried out by the CRC and are another tool available for decision-making. With these figures it is evident that the mobile voice service has maintained an important participation in the sector with a stable behavior and a sustained demand for the service”, said Paola Bonilla Castaño, executive director of the Communications Regulation Commission.

In Colombia, the Mobile Network Operators are Claro, Movistar, Tigo, Avantel, ETB and WOM; and the Virtual Mobile Operators that are in the country are Virgin, Logística Flash, Almacenes Éxito, Suma Móvil and Setroc.

Tigo had the fastest mobile network in Colombia in 2021

The CRC published the results of the measurements of the quality of fixed and mobile Internet services from the user experience in 2021, the entity analyzed the average download and upload speed on mobile networks.

Upload and download speeds refer to the speeds that users use to upload and download information from the Internet. Which translates into the time it takes for a user to upload photos or videos to Facebook or Instagram. Now, as for the download time, we can exemplify it with a video that we see on YouTube, the better the network the user has, the less time it takes to see it and with good quality.

According to the CRC, Tigo recorded the best average download speed with 24.8 Mbps, followed by WOM with 16.9 Mbps, Claro with 16.1 Mbps, Avantel with 14.6 Mbps, Movistar with 14.3 Mbps and ETB with 14 Mbps.

Montería, Cartagena and Barranquilla presented the highest average download speeds for 2021; with 22.6 Mbps, 22.2 Mbps and 21.2 Mbps respectively. It is worth noting that Tigo is a leader in the Colombian Coastal zone.
