Apple has introduced a new feature in iOS 16 that allows extract the subject from the photos and reuse it in another application.

Subject detection in photos is used in places like the iOS 16 lock screen, which can use the subject of a photo to separate the image into layers and partially obscure the watch. This way, the images don’t have to be Portrait shots with depth data.

However, the feature is not limited to the lock screen. Users can tap and hold the image of a subject in a photo to separate it from the background and place it in apps like Messages or, for example, Twitter.

The system isn’t perfect and parts of the background sometimes get stuck to the subject, but overall it works pretty well.

On iPhone, devices will need the A12 Bionic or later to separate subjects from photos.
