Google confuses Pixel owners with update to Android 12 instead of 13

Pixel users in anticipation – but instead of the hoped-for Android 13, an update for the installed Android 12 is coming. Google admits errors.

Google announced the update to Android 13 for Pixel smartphones on Monday. But on numerous devices, instead of the expected Android 13, a good 2 gigabyte update to Android 12 arrived – and caused confusion. Google has confirmed the error and now wants to fix it.

Google started distributing the new Android version 13 for its Pixel smartphones on Monday evening. Instead, users who were expecting the new Android were announced an update to a version they already had: Android 12 – also on a Pixel 6 Pro in our editorial office. This caused confusion and some speculation on Reddit and in numerous forums.

“On August 15, Pixel devices running an older version of Android 12 received notification of a previously released Android 12 update that includes bug fixes,” a spokesman said when asked. “In light of the release of Android 13, the wording of the notice caused some confusion and is currently being revised for clarity.” When the 2.03 GB update is installed on the Pixel 6 devices, it is now only referred to as a “security update”, with the usual general description of bug fixes and improved performance and stability associated with such updates.

Google did not want to confirm speculation that the update to Android 12 was intended to correct firmware that had previously been played incorrectly on some devices and thus to prepare for Android 13. “This update is separate from the Android 13 release, which we started distributing to supported Pixel devices on Monday,” the spokesman said.

The update to Android 13 will arrive on more and more Pixel smartphones from the 4th generation over the next few weeks, the exact date depends on the approval by the network operator. “Users will be notified as soon as the update is available for their device,” explains the Google spokesman.

After the update to Android 13, however, there is no turning back for the Pixel 6 family. On the download page for developers, Google warns that a new bootloader for Pixel 6a, Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will be played with Android 13, which will make a subsequent downgrade to Android 12 impossible.
