Google is revising Gmail with a new view: An additional sidebar for chat and video conferences is intended to provide an overview.

Google is now gradually introducing a new Gmail interface for all users. Although it looks similar to the previous standard view at first glance, it adds a new sidebar to it. This allows users to switch between Google apps such as chat, meet video conferences or spaces. Which applications Gmail displays here can be set in the quick settings.

In the sidebar there is also a notification field for open conversations of the chat. Gmail now shows its messages in a preview, including optional quick replies, so that users do not have to switch to the chat application. The entire interface is now based on Material Design 3, which Google introduced at the end of 2021.

On the right side of the Gmail window, Google has placed another sidebar with links to the Office applications. In general, the layout corresponds to the conversion of Gmail for Workspace announced in February – but now not only corporate users but also private users receive the update.

If you want to try the new interface directly, you can activate it in the settings and switch back to the old view here. In the announcement, Google emphasizes that users should always be able to use their preferred Gmail – so whether the provider will keep the old interface and the simple HTML version remains open.
